Well Cherry, you have to know that along the centuries Italy's been invaded by a number of peoples, there's no place here to name them. However they leaved or they integrated themselves also with dishes of their original culture. Today in Italy it isn't enough an encyclopedia to write all existing disches, food, drink and all their variants. So if you go to Rome, (I am from Milano) I advert you a little menu: to start, ANTIPASTO CON SOTTACETI. First real dish is called PRIMO (first): you can have SPAGHETTI ALLA ROMANA, LASAGNE, or CANNELLONI RIPIENI. For SECONDO (second): SALTIMBOCCA ALLA ROMANA, INSALATA MISTA CON MOZZARELLA DI BUFALA, or AGNELLO ARROSTO. If you like fish you can have a ORATA AI FERRI, or FRITTO MISTO, or TROTA AL CARTOCCIO (a kind of sweet-water fish). You can continue with a taste of FORMAGGIO (cheese): PECORINO ROMANO and CACIOTTA STAGIONATA. Over all a good and fresh Roman White wine. (the region of Rome is Lazio, and the good wines of it are white, but normally we drink white or red or rosato (rose colour), depending the food. The most important rules are: red with meal and white with fish). Then you can end with a cake: TIRAMISU' or MILLEFOGLIE or SAINTHONORE' or a COPPA DI GELATO E FRUTTA. A good and strong coffee and, if you want a taste of LIMONCELLO. This is a menu, but there are, only in Rome, hundreds and hundreds. I haven't give you the explication of the dishes. You have to discover them. The maximum it would be eating all that, under a fresh pergola in some little restaurant on a hill around Rome. If you could taste that, when you'll return to home, I'll wait for your news, I,m sure that you'll love me for all your life without having ever saw me. Ciao. |

This questions can't really be answered. It depends on where you are. If you are in Tuscany you want rustic foods, meats and olive oils. If you are near the water you want fresh seafood. Certain areas specialize in certain fresh foods.
When I was in Italy we ate a lot of panini. You can have a wide variety of choices and it is really cheap, especially if you eat it at the counter or take it to a piazza. I don't think I was anywhere that didn't have pizza. I liked the quattro frommagio the best. A mixture of salty, sharp and creamy cheeses! YUM!
Make sure that you stay away from places where the menu says the food has been frozen. I don't know if it's a law or not, but at most of the restaurants we were at if the food had been previously frozen it was noted on the menu. |

Yes, pizza is certainly the typical Italian dish and you must eat it in Italy once at least... but I suggest you to try ''linguine all'astice'' in a good restaurant and ''cannelloni'', also if you can't find them everywhere. Why? Well, I'm Italian (so, sorry for my bad English) and I tell you that these are specialities for Italian people too!! The best places to eat are far from the big cities. Especially in central Italy, there are lots of quite cheap restaurants (about 40 euros per person) that give you complete meals (starters and so on... really a lot of food, believe me!) of fish or meat. Well, I hope I answered your question!! Bye! |

Pizza in Rome, because it is soooo much better than pizza anywhere else, even in Italy. If you're American and have never had real Roman pizza, it will be a revelation. For most of the rest of Italy, anything with seafood; the Mediterranean fish is very fresh and really incredible. If you are in the far north of Italy, polenta and risotto, because they are typical dishes. It all depends on where you are going! Ask what the local specialties are. Truffles and wild boar in the fall. etc. etc. |
