I did this exact trip. My itn was to start in Rome, stay for 2 days. Rented a car at Camponcino (or however its spelled) airport, because it is cheaper and easier to get to. We drove north to Florence, stayed a day. Went to Vinci the next day (home of Leonardo). Then drove to Pisa and spent a day there. Drove the next day around the coast to Genoa, wasn't the best place in the world but it was alright. Then drove the next day north to Milan and spent a couple days there. The last leg of the trip can take a long time cause there is so much to see. The trip to Venice from Milan is beautiful and I recommend stopping at a few of the lake towns and in Verona, has a cool ancient Arena and is the setting for Romeo and Juliet. Spend at least 2 days in Venice unless you have plenty of time in which case 5 days would work great. Too many things to do there to mention, but St Marks sq is a must as is the Island of Murano...We drove from Venice back to Rome and found out that you can return the car at either airport (if you happen to be flying out of FCO). A great trip, very exhausting, but the best one I've ever been on. |

Hi! You can drive along the "autostrada A1 " untill bologna and then follow the "autostrada A13" untill venezia. You'll take 6 hours to complete all the travel. Travelling in AUTOSTRADA is the best way in Italy to moove by car.
(You pay 27 euro for driving in autostrada from Rome to Venice) |

There are many "best" routs. Your best bet is to Google yourself a Michelin Road Map and plan an itinerary based on the amount of time and money you have. |

I live in Italy and have done this many times the best ,easiest and most direct way is taking the A1 from Rome North past Florence and just folllow the signs it takes you right there. I think this maybe the only way to really go unless you take some back country roads and that would make it very slow. |

probably along the coast. go north from rome. go thru pisa. and florcence and go over the appinines or however u spell it. then go thru ravenna. see the best of everything except milan. trip if u stop along the way see some of the towns and cities will take less than a week. |
