What's the cheapest and best way travel around Rome? |
I'm going to Rome soon for 6 days staying near the Termini station. I plan to visit the main city sites (Colosseum, St Peters, Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, etc). What is the cheapest and best way for me travel around by public transport? |

Hello,
If you want to go by public transportation then the metro is the way to go. You can buy a single use ticket for 1 euro, a one day ticket for 4 euros, a 3 day ticket for 11 euros or a 7 day ticket for 16 euros. There are only 2 metro lines and they connect most of the sites in Rome.
That being said, personally, I always walk when I go to Rome. It is a very compact city and all the sites are close to each other. You can walk from the trevi fountain to the colosseum/forum area in about 10 minutes. From the trevi fountain to the pantheon is also about 10 minutes. The vatican is a little further out but is still only about 15 minutes past the pantheon. The cheapest way is to walk, followed by taking the metro.
Since you are staying in Rome for 6 days, you might want to consider getting the romapass. You can get it at romapass.com. This pass costs 20 euros, gives you free access to the first 2 sites you see- bypassing the lines, discounts to the other sites and museums in Rome plus it gives you a transportation pass to use on the metro and busses. The pass is good for 3 days. The site pass and the metro pass are two different tickets which are good for 3 days each. You can use them at the same time or at different times. You get all that for 20 euros. The first two sites you use it on pays for the pass, then you get the discounted prices and the metro pass for free. It really is a great way to save money. Just a note: the colosseum/palatine hill/forums are considered one site and only count as one entrance on the romapass. You can visit all 3 for just one entrance.

Most of the places you mention could be visited on foot from Termini (perhaps visiting the Vatican and the Colosseum on different days though!).
If you want to use public transport...
The metro is limited with just 3 lines (every time they dig to make new tunnels they discover important Roman remains!), but it is cheap and easy to use for a traveler.
But you'll see much more by bus, so if you're feeling brave, ask people about what buses you can get to your destinations. You can buy tickets at the Tabaccheria and time stamp them in the machine on the bus. Don't be afraid to ask the bus driver or someone else to tell you when to get off. it can also help to follow the route on a good map so you know when to get off. |

When I was in Rome I walked everywhere. The only Metro I took was to the Vatican. Rome is a very nice city to walk in and one thing about walking is you discover more things than taking the taxi or the metro. While you are walking stop in a small little coffee shop for some espresso or grab a bite to eat at a family run resturant. Enjoy your trip!!!!!!!!! |

I agree with Renata, I almost always just walk in Rome. There's so much to see that you'd miss in a bus or on the metro. However, if you really want to use public transportation, you might be interested in the Roma Pass that combines museum discounts with access to public transportation: http://www.romapass.it/?l=en. There are also weekly passes available for the buses. You might want to read this also: http://www.romebuddy.com/givesadvice/metropasses.html

All of the above answers are good, but don't forget the "hop on, hop off" double decker tour buses. You buy a 24 hour ticket and get the grand tour complete with audio, every time you see someplace you want to visit just hop off and take a look, and catch the next bus that comes by. We always do it the first day in a new city, it helps us get oriented, and see things we might miss otherwise. Then we make a list of things to go back and see in the following days.
The best hop on, hop off in Rome is the one run by the Roma city bus line ATAC. It has the most stops, and covers more of the city.
Good luck, have fun. Take an extra memory stick for your camera. |

Walking is great.
Public transportation is cheap. Metro is fast and I reccomend it. Easy to follow stops so I'm sure you won't get lost. Just make sure you buy a ticket. I've seen tourists get stopped because they try and ride for free. The same goes for buses. The buses have a machine that stamps your ticket....you could probably get away with not stamping it (making it invalid for future use) but it's better than getting stopped and having to pay a larger fine. Again, I've seen seeming "innocent" people get stopped.
Buses afford you the opportunity to see Roma without having to walk, so that is nice. Take a bus from the termini to St. Peters if you want to view the city. It's probably the longest ride out of all the sights you'll see, so take a bus so you don't miss out on the sights of the city. |
