I went to Italy just a few weeks ago with the same moto - as cheapest as I can. I went to north Italy, Venice, Florence, Vicenca and Padua. first of all, SKIP Venice because it's the most expensive one... Go for a day, because it's interesting but dion't sleep there. Second, the cheapest places are deffinitly the people's homes which are arranged perfectly and where you can only sleep in. Also a lot of B&B are cheap, but rooms that people rent are great and the price it's nice, as well... You can find the list of all the hotels, B&B and their adress' and phone numbers in Tourist guides and tourist spots. Then take coins of 1 euro and less, go to the phone box and DIAL!!! have a nice trip!

You've got to stay in hostels my friend... It will also be the most rewarding - You'll meet people doing the same thing as you and plus the Hostels have guests like yourself everyday, so they'll be able to give you tips and advice on where to eat good and cheap, how to travel between Milan and Venice on a budget etc.

Italy is a fantastic country too - don't forget to sample some of the culture there! Enjoy!

If you can then go with the hostels. This is usually the safest way to go.
I know sleeping in the park or other places like this sounds good but the police will roust you and possible put you in jail.
