A standard second class fare from Rome to Florence is 33 Euros; from Florence to Venice is 23.5 Euros. Fisrt class is 47 and 30.5 respectively.

car rent is pretty expensive, I'd suggest to book your train tickets in some travel agency, so you'll probably get more than 50%off : if you book early they always have many good deals

Yes by train. By a Italy euro-rail pass. Take my advice and pay a little extra for first class. Unlike air travel it is not a large difference and price and can make a big difference. But either way it will be easy and convientent without much cost. Renting a car is not only only expensive because of outrageous gasprices, but driving in Itlay can be a little tricky around the bigger cities.

You end up paying way more money if you buy a Eurail pass than if you just booked at the station upon arrival in Italy. There is only one rail system from Florence to Venice, and that is Trenitalia. Their website is available in English and you can get timetables and prices.

trains are cheap in italy compaired to the uk
there are four types of trains
slowest/cheapest to fastest/most expensive
1. inter regional... these are little trains which travel in the regions.. eg tuscany or lazio
2. express. not very express but good enough on a budget.. go the length and bredth of italy
3. inter-city. faster than express
4. euro star. all singing all dancing and fast

you also get what you pay for i you know what i mean the eurostars are brand new and very modern where as the express trains are a bit delapidated..
if you are in no rush the express trains are good enough and the buffet cars on italian trains are excellent with beer, wine, cafe, cappuccini and lovely pastries and if there is seating in the buffet car waiter service.. i spent a very plesent afternoon travelling from florence to rome on an express train in the buffet car drinking rather too many cans of hieneken....
