In terms of transportation, it is cheapest to buy tickets for individual trips directly at the train station before you depart. If you have a lot of baggage you should probably reserve a seat as well. This costs an extra three euros but it means you will be more comfortable and your luggage will be safer. For timetables and routes see http://www.trenitalia.it (available in English)

There are many, many hostels in Italy, most of which are not connected to Hosteling Internation. A good resource for hostels is http://www.hostels.com . Many former residences of nuns and priests have been converted into hotel-style accomodation (of which many are still run by the church). These are cheap and safe, but often have single-sex rooms with curfews. I hate Rick Steves' personality but I have to admit his guidebooks have great information about budget accomodation: definitely worth buying and taking on the road.

When it comes to dining, there are lots of places that serve take-away pizza and kebab for a low price. You can go to most bars/cafes and get a cheap bowl of pasta for lunch, or look for big chains like Brek that serve Italian specialities cafeteria-style.

Train travel in Italy is cheap and convenient. Buying a rail pass or tickets through RailEurope is a waste of money. They charge more than what the national company (Trenitalia) does. There are several promotions being offered by Trenitalia - Italy's national rail network.

29/39 euro Eurostar promotion
http://www.trenitalia.it/en/promozioni_offerte/promozioni/eurostar.html

"Freedom to travel starting from 15 euro" on IC, ICPlus and domestic Night Trains-
http://www.trenitalia.it/en/promozioni_offerte/promozioni/liberta_viaggi.html

last minute - "Happy Train" travel for 10euros

Check http://www.trenitalia.it/en/index.html for timetables.

Get a eurorail pass and take the train. Stay in hostels ( check out hostelworld.com)

It depends on how many people. For one person, the train is pretty good. If you have two or more, flying with local airlines can be cheaper! :)

*-MaGiC*DoUBt-*
Or you can buy eurorail tickets they usually have discounts for students and haver several circuits according to what every person would like to do!
