Carabinieri are intended as military police, as matter of the fact they incorporated in the army forces. From there over the years, they have became as a normal police apparatus.

The Arma dei Carabinieri (Carabinieri Corps) is the national gendarmerie of Italy, policing both the military and civilian populations.
The Carabinieri is now a branch of armed forces (alongside the Army, Navy and Air Force), thus ending their long standing role as the first corps of the Italian army.
