From the Midlands, (UK) airports I can get flights to Rome but I need to get to Florence for the end of May but so far cannot find out what airlines fly there.

The Florence airport - http://www.aeroporto.firenze.it/IT/index.php - lists all airlines serving the airport.

no airlines fly from the UK into florence.to pisa but not florence (pisa is 1hr by train from florence).
florence in EU is connected with munich paris amsterdam and a few more cities but no UK cities at all.

Ryanair fly from EMA to Pisa. I got the price down to £32.19.

There is a direct coach between the airport and S M Novella statzione in Firenze taking about 70 minutes. Or you can get the train that can take 1hour to 2:30...

I think Thomson do - they definitely fly to Pisa and that's about 3 1/2 hrs from Florence so you could always fly there and drive, if your brave enough (Italian driving is unbelievably bad!)

Maybe you could look at flying into Pisa instead of Florence? Pisa is the airport closest to Florence that has a lot of flights. All the guide books on Italy say they are good connections (direct rain and buses) between here and Florence and the distance is only about 35 miles.

Ryanair flies to Pisa from East Midlands, Easyjet flies to Pisa from Bristol and Thompson flies to Pisa from Coventry, Manchester and Doncaster.
