Every meal has a pasta course; some meals are nothing but pasta.

The other food which is incredibly popular in Italy is ice-cream. Even at this time of year when the temperature is not much above freezing and sometimes below (yes, it does get that cold in Italy in the winter!), many cafés are still selling the stuff and you will still see a few people wandering around with an ice-cream cone or eating it from a little paper cup.

It is generally delicious (much better than most of what's sold as ice-cream in the US or UK), but I draw the line at eating it when there's snow on the ground. Brrrrrrr!

Various places in Italy has various food traditions. From what I understand pasta and pizza are more popular in the southern part of the country, risotto is atypical north Italy dish and in Florence they specialize in steaks (Bistecca Fiorentina). But in general...I think the food is great in Italy :-)
