What are average prices for accommodations in Italy?

For example, if I went for a week or so in summer, how much do hostels and hotels run? And what would be your estimate on how much I would spend, total? Very general answers are ok, I just don't have much of an idea.
Additional Details
Thanks for all the helpful answers! I'll check out those websites.

Prices vary a lot depending on where you stay and exactly when you're here. The hotel I stayed in the first weekend of Carnevale just off Piazza San Marco was 150 euro a night. The next weekend, the same room was 400 euro a night. The weekend after, when Carnevale was over, the room was 80 euro per night. Right now, the same place is around 100 euro per night. In Rome in July, you can book a hostel for $25 to $40 per night for a dorm style room right now. There are a few less expensive places and a few more expensive.

You can check sites like Venere.com http://en.venere.com/italy/ for prices in specific locations and times. The site will allow you to sort by area of a city, price, ratings by past guests and other criteria. This will be more useful than a generic "average". Another reason that seasonal averages don't mean a lot are that price structures are changing because demand is down a lot this year woth the change in the economy. Both the flight and hotel I have booked for the Netherlands at the end of the month are about half of the price last April - same flight, same hotel.

For hostels, you can use sites like: http://www.hostelitaly.com/ , http://www.hostelbookers.com/hostels/italy/ , http://www.hostels.com/it.html

It depends by what kind of accomodation are you searching. If you want a 5 stars hotel in the city center... well... it will cost a lot. I live in Rome, so my examples will be for Rome: the "Hotel De Russie", between the Spanish Steps and Piazza del Popolo has rooms for 6.000 euros per night. Of course you can also take a hotel not so central, or a bed & breakfast, spending something like 50/60 euros for a hotel or 30/40 euros for a b&b.

Other expenses in Italy aren't so high as in other countries: transports are cheap (in Rome: 16 euros to travel for a week on subway, buses and trams), food is cheap (A LOT less than in London or Paris), pubs and clubs are not so expensive (4/5/6 euros for a pint of beer).

It's impossible to say how much you'll spend in a week (it depends by what you want to do) but anyway it's possible to don't spend milions...

i'm from roem dont listen to all these voices....
it depends on where you go in italy....if you go to a art city (rome, milan, venice, florence) hotels 3-4 stars can cost you for 100 to 250 for night.
here you can find many accomodations and compare them to see wich one is best for you:

To eat it depends qere you want to go, there are touristic restaurantes, that cost alot and arent so good, or there are real italin restourantes that cost a bit but the food is really good. if not there are the trattoria, or osteria that cost less than a restaurant but the food is fantastic...
i think you will spend about 20-30 euros a day for 3 meals
For the flight, from the usa...it should cost around 1000€...

This is a very difficult question to answer. It depends on the period you are travelling and where you will be travelling too. Touristy cities such as Rome, Venice and Florence a lot more expensive than say Chieti, Latina or Reggio Emilia. Also, will you be staying in a city or town? The cities are usually more expensive. In the summer, the busiest and most expensive month is August (generally speaking). Watch out for Ferragosto (August 15th). Most cities/town are basically shut down except for the sea resorts or touristy cities. The majority of Italians have their holidays in August (a lot have them during the Ferragosto week)...so hotel rates are going to be a lot higher than say in June or Septemember. Sorry I couldn't be of much help, but I don't have enough information.

You can find best prices from the site www.stayresitaly.com

Hostels are a great way to save money for an individual traveler. However, the price is per person so 2 or more travelers MAY be able to stay in hotels for the same amount. Check http://www.european-hostels.net

Hostels also tend to be communal, and occasionally staying in a real hotel (with full bathrooms) can be nice.

If you have no idea at all, A good starting point is http://www.european-hostels.net/italy-hostels.html

Hotels, maybe 300 Euro per night.
For a week, perhaps 3000 Euros upscale and 2000 downscale.
