Basilicata or Lucania as it used to be called is one of the little known parts of Italy, a rare jewel for sophisticated travellers. The musts are:
1.Matera, where you can see the “cave dwellings”, still used Today, with private homes and shops and restaurants carved into the living “tuft “ cliffs (Sassi di Matera);
2.Melfi – where you can admire Emperor Frederick II’s castle and if you visit during the last week of October of each year you can see the Historical Tatoo, with the “Hawk masters” and enjoy a Mediaeval dinner (Falconieri di Melfi);
3.Avigliano-Lagopesole – another Mediaeval castle of Frederick’s, with a lovely surrounding district of woods and natural beauty;
4.Venosa –with its ancient baths and other ruins, dating from Roman and pre-roman times;
5.Maratea-Rotonda- where you can see the Nature Park of Pollino, an unspoiled piece of Mediterranean flora.
Apart from these tips, just hire a car and go from village to village, you'll enjoy exquisite and genuine hospitality.

Sassi di Matera
Matera has gained international fame for its ancient town, the "Sassi di Matera" (meaning "stones of Matera"). The Sassi originate from a prehistoric (troglodyte) settlement, and are suspected to be some of the first human settlements in Italy

Check the web site: www.aptbasilicata.it.

I went to Monticchio Lakes, and it is a really beautiful place.

Enjoy your stay in Italy!
