Venice and cheap are not two words that go together well. Normally, I'd recommend Venere.com. Guessing what you might mean by really cheap, your best bet is checking hostel availability even though it's not what you'd prefer. Actually this hostel site includes a lot of lower end budget hotels: http://www.hostelworld.com/findabed.php/ChosenCity.Venice/ChosenCountry.Italy?source=googleadwordseuro&gclid=CLTOxsKUzJMCFROA1QodwXDikA. There's a wide range of budget places listed on the site. The cheapest options will be on the Lido island or on the mainland around Mestre or Jesolo, but then you'll have transportation costs to get to St Mark's. The higher rated places will usually be at the upper end of the price range.

Anything "cheap" in Venice is apt to be unsuitable for human habitation. Stay in Mestre, just outside Venice, and the take the inexpensive train into Venice.
