Ma Dài ?!!
Hi, I'm Italian. There's a lot of beautiful small cities in Italy you can visit, and not enough space to name them all. By the way, how much 'small'? However, if you go to the North I suggest you: Verona, Mantova, Ferrara, Bergamo, Ravenna, Chioggia, Udine...
In Central Italy: Siena, Pisa, Lucca, S.Gimignano, Urbino, Perugia, Orvieto, L'Aquila...
In the South: Amalfi, Sorrento, Lecce, Matera, Siracusa, Agrigento...

Cinque Terra, Verona, Sienna, Ischia...those are the ones that I recommend. Ischia is actually an island off the coast of Naples, which is beautiful and not as 'touristfied' as Capri that is about 30 minutes away.

Hi, I live in Verona (I'm italian) and let me tell you it's a nice place to visit!
It's great cause it's not far from Venice (100 km) and please don't miss Venice, so unique, and then just see Verona and Mantova, nice very small town, and sorroundings.
Tuscany itself is great, Siena has been mentioned, but not just Siena, don't miss Pisa, a magic town, and small villages around. Top is San Gimignano and Volterra http://www.sights-and-culture.com/Italy/San-Gimignano-view.html

A good small town is Verona. There is beautiful Villa turned hostel. It has frescos, a courtyard and is walking distance to the river and the Romeo and Juliet "balcony".

I really loved Assisi, Italy.....it was beautiful and sort of like a dream......it was what you would imagine Italy to be.

Sorry, I have only ever been to Munich in Germany and didn't go any further than the airport.

It depends on where you're going, north or south of Italy?

i agree with ontheroad that you should just explore and see what you find. some of the best towns we found were from driving to another place. but my fav was the one we stayed near, spoleto. it is in umbria and just beautiful! and it was not too far to drive to florence or rome. the people were so nice and the town was just awesome to walk around and discover. there is a train from rome to spoleto, try to head out there if you get a chance. they have a huge festival in spoleto near the end of june. in general, roam through umbria, the scenery is beautiful and the towns are nice.

but i know you will not go wrong no matter where you roam in italy! there is so much to discover and fall in love with.

Any of the hill towns and villages that are rarely or less touristed.
There are tons through-out Italy. Just wander and explore. The best are the ones you discover and stumble upon as you roam.

Castelsardo, Sardinia is wonderful. We went to a beautiful restaurant called Il Nuraghe there during a football match and we were the only diners there - the town was deserted. But you can't go in the summer because the rest of Italy is vacationing in Sardinia, I've heard.
