don't miss the wonderful Sorrento (in province of naples) and/or Amalfi coast (in province of Salerno, but just 15 minutes away from the sorrento one).
Positano, the isle of Capri, but also Sorrento and ruins of pompeii, the Vesuvius..there's a lot to see.

Even though I am italian, I have never been to Italy but my aunt lives near there and here are very good sites
Rome: You have a lot of sites like the colusseum, Vatican City, Trevi FOuntain, etc
Venice: Has boats instead of water in the streets so that is awesome
Pisa: Leaning Tower Of Pisa which we cannot figure out
Vataan City: St Peter's Basilica, the Pope, etc |

Too many places to tell! Are you going to south or north? to the cities or to the country? On summer or winter? Our little country is gifted with many places to see and love.
If you are asking today in April I could imagine that you're planning a trip on late spring/Summer so I totally suggest the South: from Sicily to Campania, from Calabria to Puglia. Any of this regions could really fulfil your vacation dreams. Wonderful beaches, incredible trekking routes, castles and churches, museums and medieval villages.
If you have limited time I think the best is to choose a region, maybe a city, and explore it. Consider Siracusa in Sicily, or Lecce in Puglia, or maybe the area around Naples and the islands in front of it.
With a limited time don't move too much or you'll not find out the real richness of Italy that is not so easy to spot. That's the reason why I keep a english blog with the many places I've seen in my country. I update it often and try to talk about the most beautiful and hidden places I know to let people like you see my country in the right way!
Take a look at http://www.map-of-italy.eu
If you have any question just write me on my blog and I'll surely help you!
And have a nice trip!
