Fontana de Trevi and catacombs in Rome,
Florence
Venice or Venezia (market), and lunch/dinner in Lugano (much cheaper to stay there or eat there) or Murano (glass making factories/tours). Shopping for glass at reasonable prices at the market in Venice. The gondolas are overpriced.
Pisa - stop by only for the picture
of course, the Vatican, and museums nearby.

don't skip on the ice cream (gelato) and the pizza or pasta.

Florence (or Firenze, as it is called in Italy) is absolutely beautiful, and in one small place, there are so many great things to see, without having to move around in large distances. You can do it all on foot, in just one day, or one week, depending how much time you have!
