These are some fun things to do in Rome, I started with the free things first:
The Pantheon in the evening (closes at 7:30Pm) is beautiful. In Winter it's already dark by 5Pm so the atmosphere of the square (Piazza della Rotonda) and inside the Pantheon is special.
Look out for the free concerts, choirs in the churches. http://www.rivistadellenazioni.it have some info on upcoming events, only in Italian unfortunately, but click on the "Grande musica in Chiesa" link and then translate the page using http://www.babelfish.com or something else.
I have been to some by the Nova Amadeus orchestra in the Santa Maria Sopra Minerva (just around the corner from the Pantheon) and I had goosebumps throughout the whole performance.
Visit http://www.romanlife-romeitaly.com./the-pantheon.html for info about the Pantheon area and Santa Maria Sopra Minerva.
Views from the Janiculum hill, day or night time. If you go with your partner it's especially romantic at night. Use this page http://www.romanlife-romeitaly.com./trastevere.html for advice about how to get there. You can walk up through the gardens too.
Mouth of truth (Bocca della Verita), Santa Maria in Cosmedin, Temples of Hercules and Portunus, the Fontana dei Tritoni (fountain of the Tritons), and Arch of Janus are all within a hundred meters of each other and form part of the Forum Boarium. Free and in the open. http://www.romanlife-romeitaly.com./campo-de-fiori.html
Views from the Parco Savello next to the Santa Sabina Monastary in Aventine, and a few steps away, the views through keyhole of the entrance gate at the Military order of the Knights of Malta. Visit the Aventine area http://www.romanlife-romeitaly.com/aventine.html for advice on how to get there.
Walk along the Tiber River, very relaxing, a few meters down from street level, you can get a different perspective of the surroundings in relative tranquility.
Walk through the Villa Borghese gardens. The gardens are very big, beautiful and well kept (and full of beautiful fountains).
The basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano, Scala Santa just across the road (climb the steps on your knees if you're feeling particularly devout), and the excellent Market in Via Sannio (the road running outside and parallel to the city walls) they sell mostly new clothes, shoes, hand bags etc good bargains to be had. http://www.romanlife-romeitaly.com./san-giovanni.html
Piazza di Campidoglio and the Victor Emmanuel (Vittorio Emanuele) monument. You can climb the steps and appreciate the view from the Vittorio Emanuele monument, Rome's largest wedding cake.
On the same hill (Capitolino - Capitoline hill) you can walk through Michelangelos' square the Piazza di Campidoglio. Michelangelo designed the facades of the buildings, the main staircase and the paving.
The views over the Roman Forum from the other side of the square are excellent.
A walk along the ancient Appia Antica. If you can find your way to the Roman Acqueducts (Claudian and Felice) from there it's also worth it.
Walking through Trastevere at night and soaking up the atmosphere of real Roman nightlife. http://www.romanlife-romeitaly.com./trastevere.html
Piazza Navona at night. The square and restaurants are always buzzing. The fountain is beautiful at night. http://www.romanlife-romeitaly.com/piazza-navona.html
Piazza de Campo de Fiori at night. Again, soak up the atmosphere, of the many pubs, cocktail bars and restaurants that line the square.
Piazza de Campo de Fiori market in the mornings (a real Roman cultural experience) the market is a mixture of flowers, food an clothing. On Sunday afternoons, the street performers are brilliant.
Buy an ice- cream and sit on the steps in front of the Trevi Fountain.
Go very early to St Peters and climb the stairs to the Cupola (get there early!) cost is 5 Euros But well worth it!
When you go back down visit the St Peters Cathedral (free).
As my friend says "It looks like Pimp my church". But this for me is the most impressive building in the world, even if the contradictions are overwhelming. http://www.romanlife-romeitaly.com/the-vatican-city-rome.html
Enjoy! |

Go to the flea markets. There are a lot of them. Some once a month some every day. Porto Portese is the most famous and the biggest. |
