see Palermo, Etna,Taormina and Valle dei Templi(if have time visit his islands:Pantelleria - Lipari - Vulcano - Lampedusa- Stromboli), eat a Granita(typical), cannoli and cassata(sweets)... typical pasta is: Pasta con le Sarde, great!

It all depends on what time of the year that you go. The small towns have festivals throughout the year. If you can make to one of those I'm sure you will have a great time. I lived there for two years and loved watching the Italians interacting during the festivals. I personally didn't care for Palermo. I thought it was a dirty city but they do have the catacombs there which are interesting. Enna is fantastic. Taormina is beautiful. The valley to the temple of the Gods is spectacular. Corleone has great wine and if you do go to Palermo or are flying into or out of there than I would suggest stopping over in Corleone. Make sure to see Etna. Do some research and see if they have busses that will take you up the mountain. It is a all day journey on foot. I would definetly see Etna. It's the largest active volcano in Europe. If you have time I would suggest a helicopter flight out of Catania to Malta. It's a short ride and a great time there. Supposedly the oldest man-made homes are on that island. There's a couple casino's there also.

you should see mount etna, a very big volcano, taormina for the beautiful beach, mondello near palermo a very cute town, erice is a stunning medievel town, you want to probably see old greek temples of Selunto or Agrigento, you want to try ice cream,pistachios,cannoli,
and please do not say minghia, it's a bad word

must do:
eat cannoli ala ricotta, cassata and lots of granite! and also some fichi d'india, if its the season! and dont forget to say "minghia" now and then, as an expression of surprise (so that you wont offend anyone by using it in other occasions)

must visit:
palermo, monreale, siracusa, noto, agrigento and the greek temples and catania and mount etna (the volcano).
if you can, the islands are also worth visiting!

Well, it all depends on your interests, but I would suggest the following;
1) Taormina
2) Gole dell alcantara
3) Etna
4) Trapani/Segesta
5) Valle dei Templi

My favorite place to go...

Go to Palermo and about an hour away is a little mountain town with a castle on it! Its called Erice. Unbelievable!!
Taormina is awesome, but that is on the other side of Sicily.

Definitely skip Palermo, it's not worth the time or money to go there. Very dirty and not much to see. Taormina was beautiful, as others have said. Make sure your hotel is in a location suitable to see the things that you want, though. If you plan on spending a lot of time at the beach, don't get a hotel at the top of a mountain because it could be an hour bus ride down to the beach... something you may not want to deal with on your vacation! Plan your trip according to the train, also, if that will be your main source of transportation. There is no train from Palermo to Taormina so you have to go all the way back to the top of the island to get to Taormina. Just something to consider.
