From LAX, there's another option that's cheaper - take the Delta Flight 132 to JFK in New York connecting to Flight 136 to Pisa. There's a train station at Pisa airport. You can catch a train to Florence or pick up a rental car.

When I've flown back to Rome from LAX, I prefer the direct flight from LAX to Zurich on Swiss Air International leaving LA at 7:30 pm and arriving in Zurich at 3:55 pm the next day (11h 25m flight time). It's a lot less likely to be affected by flight delays than flights either through Chicago or the US east coast. The flight to Rome leaves an hour and a half after the arrival of the flight from LAX.

Look it up at kayak.com. It is the best website for cheap airline tickets!

check out Aer Lingus from lax direct to dublin and then dublin firenze. I've taken this flight before and it was always good and VERY ECONOMIC..

I love flying virgin atlantic. I plan to go to italy in May, and since they don't have any direct flights to Rome, I plan on flying to london as a stop over (better then the midwest somewhere)...then flying to Rome . They have a direct flight from SFO to London, that's pretty cheap now on virgin atlantic. If you flew into Rome, you can just take a train to Florence.

Unfortunately I can only tell you what you might not want to do. DO NOT fly Alitalia. The seats are tiny, cramped, couldn't hear movie, some announcements only in Italian, always delayed, they don't give you enough wine for all of this. Oh, and the seats are the size of the economy flights you take for a few hours unless you book business. Driving is interesting in Florence. If you haven't done it before I would be careful. You might want to fly directly into Florence or take a train from Rome to Florence.

lax always has deals to italy so you need to shop around to compare prices vs. number of stopovers vs. date & times. it may be less expensive to have 2 or 3 stopovers or leave at midnight -- but do you want convenience or to pay less?

also look at flying into milan or rome & taking trains. the nearest airport to florence is pisa & prices may be higher for that smaller airport vs flying into a larger hub.

you don't need a car in italy unless you are staying way out in the country. trains & good busses go everywhere -- between cities & towns such as rome & florence definitely take trains....

my suggestion: fly into rome then take the train to florence. see if you can fly out of whichever place you visit last so you don't need circle back to rome unless you want to do that trip

I always take Newark to Europe using Contiental. If I were coming from LAX, id then go to Newark probably before heading to Milan. More flights fly into Milan than Florence and its cheaper than Rome. Although Im not sure how close Florence and Milan are, you might have to take another short flight, or train or something.

As for flights in Europe, you can get some pretty cheap fairs. 40 Euros. When I checked last month it was 500 dollars less to fly into Dublin than it was to fly into Rome. Check your options out.

If you are trying to save money fly to Rome. It is A LOT cheaper! and you can take a train to Florence. However, if this is your first time traveling abroad, I would pay the extra money to fly into Florence. It is easier if you would not feel comfortable trying to find your way around in a different country!

The best airline is the one with the best combination of schedule and price. Both Air France and Lufthansa have good schedules to Florence. I can't comment on price because that depends on when you go and how long you stay. You can check any of the major travel websites (Expedia, Orbitz, Travelocity, etc.) and compare schedules and prices.

I suggest that you avoid Alitalia, Italy's national airline. They are close to financial collapse.

Personally, I would fly to Florence rather than Rome unless you are going to spend some time in Rome. Driving in Europe is quite expensive. After a few days there, $3 a gallon for gasoline will sound very cheap to you!
