I am currently on a trip am renting cars in Bologna and Palermo. I checked everywhere and could not come close to the prices I received from Economy Car Hire. My best deals were through them using some Sicily car renter. I arrive in Bologna tomorrow.
Your best bet is to use a small car. And if you live in the US, then don't be shocked by the price of gasoline. I am in London right now and have seen it for .99 pence per liter. That works out to be about $8.00 per gallon. I've heard that Italy is just as bad. The smaller the car you can get by with, the better the gas mileage. |

If you are from the US and renting for at least a week, I'd recommend renting from www.1800flyeurope.com. I've used them many times. Your rental will be through Hertz. All their prices include full insurance coverage with no deductibles. And, they bill you in US Dollars rather than Euros so you'll avoid any foreign currency transaction fees on your credit card. Their rates are MUCH better than booking directly through any of the major rental car companies or through the big travel sites like Travelocity, Expedia, and Orbitz.
If you are renting for less than a week, there's an Italian company that I've used called Easy Car SpA (www.easycarspa.it) that has good prices (€29 per day for economy cars) for short rentals. They have offices in all of the large and most of the smaller cities (airports, train stations, and city locations) throughout Italy.
In any case, make sure you rent a small car and request a diesel. Diesel is MUCH cheaper than unleaded in Italy - though the gas prices are much higher than in the US.

Public transportation in the cities are excellent, and you probably would not enjoy driving in them. I rented a car in Tuscany in a small town and used it to visit hill towns, and the coast. Avoiding Rome, Milan and Florence is advisable. Happy traveling! |

I recently rented a car to travel around Italy. I booked it via the internet before I left Australia because I needed a car big enough for a family of 4 (2 big teenagers) and all our bulky luggage, and I wanted automatic transmission which is hard to find in Italy. I tried lots of companies and found a suitable vehicle through "cartrawler" - I think it is British.
We picked up the car at Fiumicino Airport after spending our first week on foot in Rome, drove to each destination, including several car ferries (called traghetto). Make sure that you are aware of where you can take the car and where you can't take the car.
We really enjoyed our driving around Italy; the biggest problems were the "crazies" in Sicily. |
