i live near rome...i'm italian...(sorry my bad english)
rome is all beautyful, there a lot to see
if you want to eat in a cheap place, you have to search a bar or a restaurant far from the touristic places!!
the youngest places are "s.lorenzo", "campo dei fiori" and "trastevere"
the touristic places are "colosseo", "fori imperali", "altare della patria", "vaticano" , "musei capitolini" and much more...
go to "via del corso", "via nazionale", "via condotti" and "piazza di spagna" to do shopping (not much cheap they are rich places).
i love trastevere, near the tevere, altare della patria, villa borghese, via nazionale and a lot of other places.
enjoy rome! italian suck but italy is a wonderful country!

If I could go there again I would....

Eat lemon galati next to the fountain Piazza Navonna.

Toss a coin ( or three actually!) in the Trevi fountain

Eat REAL pizza ( the wonderful, simple, thin GENUINE pizza...... not the fattening, oily excuse for pizza they sell in fast-food pizza joints in the rest of the world)

Just walk and look: the whole place is full of old buildings, ruins of ancient places, everywhere you go.

It's a wonderful city. I was there in 95 and 97. You'll love it!

Make sure you visit the Trevi Fountain! If you throw a coin in a certain way, it is said that you will come back to Rome someday. It's free to visit.
Also, try every type of food possible! Italian food is amazing. Well it costs money to eat, but it's not that expensive.
Go shopping! There are hand made masks for Carnevale and can cost from around 10 - 20 euros. These make great souvenirs and gifts for your friends.
If you would be visiting Venice, ride a Gondola and Visit St. Marc's Square.
