we only spent 2 days in rome and covered quite a bit. one thing that helped was figuring out what we wanted to do and where it was located before we went. that way we could spend plenty of time in each place instead of wasting time walking all over with no plan. also, the vatican lines are usually shorter around lunch time, so head over there then. the line for st. peters is short in the evening. the second day we bought a pass to ride the subway and it was great! it was a bit crowded at times, but it saved our feet. be sure to hit up a lot of the big stuff, but do take time to wander and just see. walk down the little side roads and peek into the stores. what great finds! |

same stuff as smd suggested. pantheon, colleseum, roman forum, trevi fountain, vatican & st peters all a must see.
would avoid the bus tour as its a fairly small city and much nicer to walk around.
metro in rome is quite small but pretty good if your in a hurry to get somewhere.
if your going in the summer be at the vatican very early as queues can be very nasty. i was there in jan this year and wasnt too busy then.
plus im from scotland so probably would find the summer heat a bit too much in rome.
if your flying its worth booking transfers b4 you go as taxis can be expensive and fares can vary quite a bit for the same journey in rome. (search on google for rome airport transfers as there are loads of comapnies offering this service)
there are 2 airports so make you get the correct one ! also tripadvisor.com has more specific info and pictures of the above attractions.
be wary of the blokes dressed as gladiators outside the colleseum as they want to charge you about 10euro to take a photo with them.
id highly recommend the guided tour of it tho as there isnt much info available inside it, whereas the tour guides seem to know a lot about it and make it more interesting.
hope you have a fab trip and hope this info helps |

Only 2 days in a city like Rome is pushing it. But in my opinion, you'll definitely want to see the Roman Forum, the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, Piazza Navona, the Pantheon, and the Vatican (specifically St. Peter's Basilica and the Sistine Chapel). Check out Yahoo! Travel for other ideas on what to do. Buy a map of Rome so you know where things are located.
You may also want to check out a tour group if you want to visit as many monuments/sites as possible in a short period of time. Try the "Things to do in Rome" website (link: http://www.thingstodo-rome.com/). They have useful information, as well as tours and airport transfer bookings. I booked my roundtrip airport-to-hotel transfers from this site and I was quite pleased. It will also save you time when you get there to know that you have transport ready and waiting.
Hope this helps. Enjoy!

Please take time to see the Vatican, it is amazing. Maybe you can go to the Vatican Library first, when it opens and then you can see St. Peters. The next day you should see the forum including the colosseum and the ancient buildings which are all close to one another. While you are there, you can make your way by bus to the shops surrounding and underneath the Spanish Steps. Have some gelato and some pizza from a small place that is readily available, and you will want to return asap. There are many more things, however for time concerns, give these a thought. Enjoy! Ciao! |

Depends on whether you're interested in museum type things or just enjoying rome. Definitely visit the Colosseum, it is amazing. The sistine chapel in the Vatican is great, but the rest of the museum is crowded, and not really worth the long lines. Definitely stop by the Roman Forum, and maybe eat a picnic lunch in Palatine hills, its gorgeous there. Do some fountains at night, when they are all lit up. Visit St. Peters either early or late, about an hour before closing the line disappears. The view from the top of the dome is great. Definitely stop by the Pantheon for a little while, and if you're into museums, go to the National Museum of Rome. |
