If you don't want to stand out as a tourist, skip the sneakers or athletic shoes. Italians don't wear them.
You will want a comfortable pair of shoes for walking. Here are a number of brands that you might want to check out: Geox & Tod's (both popular Italian brands), Ecco, Clarks, Merrel (sport-like, but popular with Italians). These are on the more expensive side but check out their styles and then you can see if you can get something similar. However, I would recommend in investing in good shoes for Italy -- walking on that this cobblestone is tough on your feet and they will thank you for treating them well. |

It depends on your feet. For me, it's flat leather sandals or flips flops; the more naked my feet are, the better. |

It depends on where you want to go. If you are going to rural or mountainous places (like in the northern part), you should wear basic hiking shoes such as Merrells. But if you are going to a city, such as Rome, wear comfortable tennis shoes, because the cobble stones will hurt your feet. I recommend the Aasic or Brookes brand of tennis shoes. They are kind of expensive, but definitely worth the cost because they will minimize foot pain! |

I have traveled to Europe quite a bit, and I wear Merrel Sandals. They are very comfortable, and have good support. I recommend them to the other people I travel with. |

See if there is a store called 'The Walking Company' where you live. They have some of the best shoes...all kinds. I've purchased 2 pairs of sandals and a pair of sneakers from there...most comfy shoes I own. They're a little pricey but I'd rather pay money for good shoes than have some cheap ones that hurt my feet. As far as standing out as a tourist, who cares...YOU ARE A TOURIST! |

A pair of black K-Swiss or Heyday footwear - look like shoes but are really sneaks or a pair of Timberland walking shoes.
I am often in Europe and see many Americans walking the city with walking shoes that would be better up in the hills than in the city. They stand out like sore thumbs, like tourists.
You'll do plenty of walking and you do indeed need a comfortable pair of shoes but you also want to look stylish and not out of place.
I suggested the black sneaks because they actually look like shoes. The Timberlands because Europe has adopted them as a status symbol (especially the Italians) . The Heyday for obvious reasons.
Make sure you break them in a good two weeks before heading across the pond. |

If you are going to Italy, the best shoes will be the ones you bought in Rome as a very practical souvenier!
Rome is the world's capital of comfy and very stylish high-quality shoes. If you are going shoes shopping, it should be there. |
