I haven't been backpacking in Europe for several years, so I don't know which hostels are the best in Rome now.

But if I could make a suggestion, from someone who's done it both ways, I would prefer staying in a cheap hotel in Rome. Rome is full of affordable hotels. Hotel prices are fixed by the government, based on location and quality of the hotel.

Rome is a hot, busy city - it can be absolutely oppressive in the summer. It's nice to be able to go back to a relatively quiet hotel, with air conditioning and most importantly - a nice shower that you don't have to wait for. There's no shortage of things to do in Rome, so you won't get bored. And there are so many tourists all over the place, it's not hard to make friends even without a hostel. You'll find them in every restaurant and in every bar; not to mention every tour group you'll eventually hook up with.

For me, the hostels in Rome were just hot, overcrowded and lacking in the fun, social atmosphere that most hostels in Europe are so famous for.

Just my opinion though!

I think that if you visit this site www.romahappydays.com you can find the right rates for you. They rent apartments for short and long term stay...Bye

Nana
I got mine for May in www.hostelworld.com they told me it was pretty good, I think it called Hostel Alessandro Palace.
Its like 40$USD a night per person, includes breakfast and it has free pizza dinner, from Monday-Friday. Check it out if you want http://www.hostelworld.com/availability.php/HostelAlessandroPalace-Rome-753

Good Luck!
