Hi! I'm from Milan, Italy.
Italian Music is rabbish!We have good singers...many good singers, but absolutely no care for music.
If you pull off voice from our songs...it doesn't remain anything. Musicians are usually professionist payed by the majors who plays without love. Emerging is very difficult if you have no one who already works in some major or has some contact.
So music has no style and has no particular changes in the last 80 years...!
The majority of "intellectually musical" people...listen british and american music.
Anyway...some good singers to listen to, are:

well, here in Italy is very very listened US music... there's something of italian on pop and rock genres, but not a lot more, italian music is in a crisis in this period.
here is very very popular dance-house music, which is foreigner, for example, there are a little italian composers of this genre.
of pop/rock, most famous singers of nowadays are Tiziano Ferro, Ligabue, Eros Ramazzotti, Gianna Nannini, Finley, Jovanotti, Cesare Cremonini, Negramaro, Irene Grandi, Nek.....or Alexia...
the problem is that 90% of italian pop music is about love, or anyway sad or calm, lazy............... that's why italians listen to a lot of american music

if u like rap, there are MondoMarcio and Fabri Fibra, singers who sing as black american rappers, but they're idiot coz they re italians :D
