Listen me i am italian and i live in rome since i was born.The first thing you have to visit is the colosseum,is big and so nice.Next visit the saint peter basilic and the pantheon(a temple with a hole in the roof!unique in the world!)and also if you have time i suggest you "fontana di trevi".These are the most important places in rome but you find hundreds to visit,anyway i suggest you to go to "pincio",that is a big hill in "villa borghese"(a park),here you have a wonderful panorama on the city!(is very romantic for you and you bf !).Hope you'll have a wonderful holiday here in rome and tell us how was it! =D

The Colosseum and the Palatine, both are a must and you can do them in one day.

Also the Vatican, and if you get there early in the day, go to the Museum to see the Sistine Chapel. But you'd need to be there early, it's very popular.

The Aventine Hill was lovely, and right across the river was a nice area too which was good for nightlife. That's the Trastavere area.

Things are kind of spread out in Rome, so make sure you are wearing comfortable shoes.

Spanish steps are nice, especially on warm evenings. The Trevi Fountain is also a draw.

When i went to rome we climbed the tower of the cathedral in the vatican, and we had great views all over the city...

I lived in Rome for five years and worked as a tour guide there. What to see really depends on what you are interested in. I would recommend the following though:

Borghese Gallery (painting and sculpture)
San Clemente Church (make sure you visit the roman houses underneath)
Doria Pamphilli Gallery (painting and sculpture)
Catacombes (Santa Priscilla are the best)
Santa Cecilia Church
Sant'Ignazio Church

You will see the Panthoen, Piazza Navona etc as you walk around the city. Beware of the guys offering tours at the colosseum, they are not very factual.

Good places to eat:

L'Archetto near the trevi fountain.
La Vittoria near the Vatican.
Dar Poeta in Trastevere

Rome isn't that big so get a map and prepare walks to take in sections where there are some "recommended" sites but wander in and out so you can take in the lesser known areas as well. Do it in bursts ie two hours at a time and stop in popular areas for a drink/bite to eat so you can observe the people etc. Start withg a plan or you will be disappointed at the end. Take care with the heat if going in summer!! Wear good walking shoes.!!

Go to the Hotel De Russie on Via del Babuino to have a drink on their patio. It's between the Spanish Steps & Piazza del Popolo. Only a few minutes walk from the Spanish Steps. It's beautiful.

If you're looking for a club scene at night take a taxi to Testaccio. It's basically a row of bars & clubs.

Have fun. It's such a great city.

first theres the obivious ones like the Colosseum, Pantheon,Trevi Fountain, Vatican Museum, Spanish Steps, Piazza Navona. and I suppose the Vatican. lol Oh and there's a really great shop called UPIM which I think hasn't closed down yet.
Shopping go to Castel romano- there are about 90 stores such as Versace, Etro, D&G reduced by about 40% of the normal retail price.
Via del Corso- bars, clubs, fashion shops
Cola di Rienzo- fashions, bags, shoes etc

a open bus tour is available , using which you can hop on & off at various stops and look around.
colloseum, and lot of piazzas.
collect the map from the hotel where u stay and its self explanatory
