A few of the top major, touristic locations are these:
Rome: The Trevi Fountain, the Vatican, horse drawn carriages, the Coliseum, what's there not to like?
Venice- if you go to Venice, do not leave without taking a Gondola ride. Also, make sure you check out San Marco's Square if you go. Great tour opportunities.
Florence- the art is wonderful there, shopping centers are great, and it's got a good mixture of an old, historic town and a modern time city.
Milan - Though I've never been there, I've never heard one bad thing about it.
In addition to these large cities, try to travel through the smaller, older towns in the countryside. This is said to be the real Italy, and if you travel to one of these smaller towns, you can truly appreciate the history of Italy and it's culture. |

Italy is a fantastic country. There is so much to do there, you could probably spend about 6 months visiting some of the different regions.
Tuscany is probably the most popular region, its famous for its food and drink, countryside and cites such as Florence.
Then you have Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast, which has some of the best coastal scenery in the world.
I would take a look at the Vivid Italy website, there is a link below. Have a good look through their concise and clear destination guides.

The ultimate best/have to see place is Rome. It is very kid friendly and you don't feel crowded as you do in Florence. The second best place is venice (not in summer more in spring) be aware of the weak sewage system. Best place to stay is a bed and breakfast called 3c. Best way to traver eurostar (train) or easyjet (cheap planes). |

When I travel to Italy I never miss The Siena cathedral, Vatican City St. Peter's church, and the Ravenna cathedral. I also take a day to see some of beautiful, romantic Sicily.
