The best are in the south from Calabria down to Sicily
Northeast near Cinque terre is also a beautiful area - and of course Sardenga!

There was one beach in Sorrento that I fell in love with!!! Most of them are rock beaches, but some friends and I got to stay at a hotel about 20 yards from a white sand beach by the Mediterranean. Heaven!

Mine is probably no where near the best, but it's the only one I went to while there, and I loved it!
We went to Follonica beach on the western coast, a bus ride from Siena. You could see some mountains in the distance and it wasn't overrun with tourists. I think my teacher had told me it was a family beach (but that didn't stop the topless sunbather we saw). Anyways, I really enjoye it!

I consider myself something of an expert when it comes to Italian beaches. Ten years of hard research spent lying on them and swimming in the seas off them has led me to the following "best Beaches"
In Sardinia:

Near Venice:

Best beaches in Italy are in the south and in Sardegna.
Sicily and Puglia are beautiful places for a holiday to the sea.
I don't recommend you to go to adriatic cost (I'm from there) sea is horrible and dirty and too crowded.

Italy has a lot of great beaches; I particularly like Gabbice Mare south of Rimini and Riccione (which are also good). On the west coast, Viareggio is good.

Mine was one near Venice, you had to take a ferry over to it but it was spectacular!
