What attractions should I see in Venice? How much do they cost?

Venice is pretty pricey, so it is good to have some idea beforehand of what you want to see and where you want to go. And the Venetians are very much aware that tourists = dollars, and as a city of merchants they will be keen to encourage you to spend.

The best way to see as many attractions as possible is to hire a guide to take you round the main ones, the Doge's Palace, Bridge of Sighs, art galleries, etc. That way you get to see quite a bit in a short time, and if you are keen you can go back later for a more thorough look at anything special.

If you are American you may want to go to Harry's Bar, where famous Americans of the past used to drink.

In St Mark's Square (Piazza San Marco) there are two cafes which are famous, one for being the oldest and the other for being the second oldest cafes in the western world. They are worth having a coffee in, to see the memorabilia from the past and enjoy the ancient atmosphere.

Murano (where they make glass products) is well worth a visit, and the island of Burano is fascinating!

Venice is great to walk around (get a good map because it's a maze), and you can do a self-tour that takes in Canareggio and the 'new' Jewish Ghetto which is fascinating and wonderful to visit, and there are not so many tourists there, it's quieter and kind of dreamy, very beautiful.

Oh, and of course the Ponte Rialto is interesting, and the shopping there is good, and it is FULL of tourists :-)

But the main and most beautiful thing I loved about Venice was going around the canals and then out into the open sea around the city. It is fantastic ... so beautiful and wonderful.

The canals. There are no roads in Venice, only canals. You have to take a boat. You can't drive a car in water.

I went to Venice in 1992. I was in the Navy and my ship was moored in Trieste. I took the train to Venice.
I didn't spend much money because the ATM machines weren't working. But I stopped in a restaurant near the Rialto Bridge and I had the most delicious slice of Lasagna I ever had in my life. Seventeen Dollars for a small slice of Lasagna.
You should try to walk over all the bridges while you are there, I did.
You might want to take a ride in one of the boats, or Gondolas, but it is at least 95 or a hundred dollars fare.

Again, there are no cars in Venice, only boats. Don't be surprized, I thought everyone knew this.

the best thing to do in Venice is to get lost in it , to discover all those little lanes ,it's almost like a labyrinth .
in my opinion the best parts of the city are those where u hardly find tourists ( Dorsoduro for example ) where u can see the true venice.

Venice is itself the attraction-just walk everywhere and you will see magnificence and magic without spending even a Euro-well, maybe for a gelato :-)

Take a boat ride, but shop around, the price varies a lot. Check out the fake beggars and the guys selling the fake brand name bags.

Along with the rest, p[lease go and see the glass blowers, that's something special, ask them to make you ants - I still have mine many years on, it's the most special momento, tiny ants they made for me.

Also be sure to go to the Spanish Steps, many people sell wares of different kinds there and they all barter nicely. Have some coconut while you're at it.

Be sure to ride the number 1 vaparetto up & down the entire main canal. It's the best (&cheapest) way to see the buildings on the canal. Try to watch a concert of Vivaldi's music.

Go to your local library and see what books they have on Venice or get information from a local tour guide or do a search on the web
