Peter N.
A very nice and quiet city near Venice is Treviso. It's about 30 Km from Venice's airport (Marco Polo).
Treviso has a small airport with flights to London, Paris, Barcelona, Amsterdam and some more European cities. The Fly Bus connects the airport with the "Venice-Mestre" train station where frequent trains leave for Treviso.
A river flows through the center of Treviso which gives a romantic flavour to the city.
