Florence (Firenze in Italian) is in Tuscany (Toscana), and is not, per say, the capital of Tuscany...it is the "capoluogo" on a regional level, which means it is the most important city in the region.
There are also other major cities, like Siena and Arezzo, which are important on other levels.
