What do you think about Naples (Italy)?

Is it considered...
- safe/dangerous?
- clean/unclean?
Are People there...
- kind/unkind?
- honest/dishonest?
I would like to know what people think about my city.
Even if you have not visited it, you can report what people say about it.

There are significant sections of Naples that are very dangerous and unsafe.

However, there are very beautiful and pleasant areas as well. Naples is one city that I would definitely want a dependable local to give me some help with where to go and where to avoid.

People - kind/unkind, honest/dishonest? It is a difficult question. Italy is a very friendly country! A lot of Italians are very outgoing. The Italians particularly enjoy children - if you are traveling with small kids - Don't be surprised if Italians come up to you and want to kiss or hold your child.

Honest/Dishonest - Americans are often seen as "rich" and so, sometimes, people (including Italians) feel that it is no big deal to take advantage of you because you have "lots of money." Capice?

Naples can be EXTREMLY dirty - I cannot count the number friends who have been there and complained of a "sanitation" strike - where no garbage is picked up - and it tends to just pile up on the sides of the streets. Not pleasant!

Finally - Don't plan on swimming the Bay of Naples. I understand that you will have the joy of taking a series of shots if you accidentally fall in the water, and that some of the beaches have trash and medical waste washed up on them. Plenty of other areas in Italy for the beach!

Its as safe as any big city here in America. It has sanitation problems, there was just a big trash strike. People were very kind to me when I was there, and very honest and helpful. An example of this is I arrived on a Monday from a week in Capri. I needed money really bad but all the banks were closed because it was a Holiday or something. All the MAC machines (bank o mats) were out of money also, an older man who heard my problem walked me to a hospital to get money. He was gone before I got to thank him. The next day I had travelers checks to cash in and was having a problem finding a bank that would take them. When I got to the Bank Di Napoli it was closed....A police officer took me into the closed bake to a manger in the bank who took care of my money problems. I loved my stay in Naples

My wife and I plus two Friends, went on a round trip by car 45 years ago. We went out of season, slept in the car for four nights. reached as far as Naples in the late evening. We all found it a bit creepy.
We booked into a hotel, this man took us through and up the stairs, then to our surprise, open a door that led us onto a gantry, over the road, then into this other building, then to our room.I must stress that we did not see any other person on the way.
Next morning we took a stroll around the town.
Quite a contrast to the night before, absolutely milling with people, anyway we came to the end of one street, and on the corner a man was beckoning me to come over, I did, and had the shock of my life.
He swung open both side of his coat, displaying a mass of small pistols. I could not understand Italian. He was trying to sell. But a shaking of my head and hands, told him I was not interested.
This does not make it a bad place, just somebody trying to make a quick buck.
Anyway we got back as far as the Swiss border and the car broke down.
Left it in garage, cadged a lift back to the port.
Car returned six months later, repaired.
