The garbage in Naples is a serious matter and I’ll try and sum it up for you. A great deal of it came from other parts of Italy and Europe, trucked down to be “recycled” (with considerable EU incentives). The problems were a) Naples did not build the recycling plants it got funds for b) the majority of the garbage was handled by criminal elements who simply dumped it in open air sites c) Naples and it’s region has a very low rate of differentiated garbage collection (about 8%, compared to 12% Rome, 36% Turin and 44% Milan ) and practically no recycling plants. Things came to a head ultimately, as the sum of these problems peaked, and we now have two emergencies, the EU threatens to cancel it’s grants and there is far to much garbage to be handled locally. Germany is offering to buy it as “garbage fuel” (they have enough recycling plants), the rest will have to be dealt with in the Region or in other, more advanced regions. Crucifying Neapolitans is unfair, the very same ethnic “Neapolitans” have created a clean paradise like coast (Costa Amalfitana) and one of the most beautiful islands of the Med. (Capri). Sociologically speaking “Naples” is the victim of “laissaez faire” Regional (to a lesser degree Municipal) mismanagement, a very high criminal presence (Camorra) and a fatalistic temperament.
It has now become a national problem and can only be solved with drastic measures, that in the end will make both the Region and the city a cleaner place. |

I'm from the north of Italy, I think mafia has the responsabily of not having taken of all the garbage, here we do the differences garbage (papers and then separatly plastic etc etc) and we have not this problem, like we have not (or less) mafia. then are people responsable too, they're frendly, they're kind and so on, but they put all their craps in plastic bags and left them on streets...these aren't recyclable!!! at the television I saw a woman telling that she had never paid garbage-tass before this problem...a little more sensibilty about earth and nature problems... |

I think it's just terrible. Of the four cities I've been to in Italy - Venice, Florence, Rome and Naples, Naples had by far the friendliest and the funniest people. Plus there are parts of it that are stunningly beautiful, gorgeous open boulevards leading down to the seafront .... I didn't find too many people that spoke a lot of English in Naples, but it didn't matter, Neopolitans have the gift of communicating with everyone. I am so sad that this lovely city is in this awful situation, and I hope it is resolved soon. |
