Good questions! That's my opinion about it.
Most of Italians are socialist. There are three kind of socialism here: catholic, right, and left. Since 1920 Italy has had a fascist dictatorship (right socialism), fifty years of catholic socialist governments, and the greater western communist party.
Mussolini was a former manager of the left socialist party. Then he became the leader of the fascist party. During his dictatorship, he build up a socialist state system. Many Italians liked it, and some still like him for this reason.
He also become the main enemy of others socialisms, and they became his main enemies, expecially the communists. That's why many italians hated him, and some still hate him.
Nowadays, most of Italians look at Mussolini as he is described by history: a dictator of the past, whose main faults were the suppression of freedom in our country, the murdering of many opposites, the alliance with Hitler, the racist laws, and the WWII. |

Well....
History dictates that Mussolini was a bad and cruel man, but those who know the real history (not the one written by the allies) know that although he was stupid for siding with Hitler, he also did a great deal of good things for Italy such as bringing order to most of Italy and also turning Italy into a more modern and patriotic country.
His negative contributions were an overly aggressive state as well as creating a group called the "Blackshirts" whice were violent towards the opposition.
During his time however in WW2, many Jews were allowed to escape through Italy because of both the church and also because Italians were not really on board with Hitlers idea of killing Jews although their treatment was not exactly good. |

the problem is the new generation (boys 14-17 years old) who consider him a hero because they think that in '30-'40 Italy wasn't so "full of imigrates" ... but hope they will understand growng up...

Its impossible generalizing about this. Everyone has a different thought. I can tell you that Mussolini has done good things in the Centre and South of Italy and he gave order. Instead when he did the alleance with Hitler he degenerated.
It's a really personal consideration, everyone considers him in a different way, but history is history. Don't be influenced by people saying he is a "bastard" without giving reasons and explanations. It's just easy saying that. But one has got to say more and know history. I think you have to pay attention for understanding and dividing the answers that have been given to you... |
