hi i'm italian, i live in a village near rome. in Italy christmas is very different from america: we decorate, for example, the house less. but in the house there is the tree(often artificial) and the presepe origin from Napoli( excuse me but i don't know how traslate!!) look for 'presepe' to youtube if u want know what is it!! in the last years the italian christmas is changing : we incoming to buy the nature tree, more high, we illuminate the us house more by comparison with the last years........ we are becoming more american for the christmas!!!!in 24th of december we dinner fish and we eat a cake called "pandoro" that is a big plunk cakes. in 25th in the morning religious people go to church and we us lunch is very big and height of local food!!! i love american christmas also because in america you have more snow. in my village instead snow at the most 1 time at year!!!! bye.........today is 18th of october......we can incoming to say merry christmas?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Criri
In Italy, besides the Christmas tree, presents and so on, there's the "Presepe" (crib or crèche) representing the Nativity, with lights and little statues of Infant Jesus, Mother Mary and Saint Joseph. You can find it in the churches, in the houses and also in the public squares. There are the cheap, the expensive or the very ancient and precious ones.

banana
we use to meet the family, have lunch and dinner together and open gifts!!! towns are all decorated and sometimes it's snowy.
more religious people are used to going to church on 24th night.

hi,i'm italian and i think it's the same..

Traveler
Its very similar but a little less commercial. Depending on how far north you are the climate approximates the east coast of the USA. Snow in the north tapering to the south. The vast majority of Italians are catholic so their beliefs are similar to ours and they do celebrate Christmas. Even to the point of having Christmas trees etc.

Rick
Christmas in Italy is quite religious and not commercial. The streets are not lined with lights, but churches are all done up. You might get a few streets that have lights, but for the most part, it is quiet, family oriented and peaceful. The tradition is to go and spend the day with the whole family and after dinner, attend mass and after that, the kids open a few token presents. Simple...the way Christmas (a religious holiday) should be.

hello I'm Italian!
here is the birthplace religios.anche in italia if we do not have all the halo on his head!
however you council to come to spend a nice Christmas here in Naples.

bye :-)

kirisit
In Italy people are not as religious as others have written but many italians go to midnight mass often only to the wishes of others.
Also often spend a lot of money to buy a nice dress for Christmas for not doing bad figure.
The houses are not decorated much, at most a Christmas tree with balls and lights and a crib (the representation of the nativity with statuettes), but not all do.
The main streets of town are lit with Christmas lights and the windows of shops too.
Unfortunately it is becoming very commercial and became almost mandatory exchange gifts which are then many times recycled and perhaps give a gift to someone else or sold on ebay why not enjoy...

I think we take more the spiritual means!
