What is Rome, Italy like for tourists during Christmas?

I'm planning to make a trip to Rome between 24-28 in December. These dates include Christmas (25), St. Stephens Day (26) and the weekend (27-28). Will it be difficult for me to enjoy the city because of the dates? Are the businesses closed during these days? The Historical sites? The restaurants? Shopping areas? Is the city too crowded?

To conclude, should i or shouldn't i take this trip if these are the only available dates?

The B&B ACQUEDOTTI ANTICHI is close to the line A subway station “Subaugusta”: in 20 minutes you will be in the inner city of Rome. Opened in March 2008, this B&B offers elegant, quiet and inexpensive rooms, furnished with simple elegance, all with private bathroom, satellite tv (Sky Network), free Internet connection (wi-fi or plug) and air conditioning; free private parking place is at disposal and just around the corner, you will find the beautiful Parco degli Acquedotti.
Our location makes very easy to join the most attractive historical and cultural sites, as well as shopping centres.
We put particular care in satisfying our guest’s expectations, especially concerning reliability, courtesy and willingness to intercultural exchange.
This B&B is well-recommended if you like simple, relaxing, warm and homely atmosphere.

Hello,

Christmas is a busy time of year for the vatican. The museums will be closed on the 25th and 26th. They will be open on Dec. 28th but that is free Sunday and will be very crowded. Sites like the colosseum, forums, castel san angelo, national art museum, capitolini museums and tons more will be closed on Christmas day. Check out www.pierreci.it/do/show/corporate/5 for information on different sites around Rome including their opening/closing times and dates.

If you are going to Rome to enjoy the sights, I would say to go in January instead of at Christmas time. For the few days you will be there, most of the sights will be closed. The crowds will be heavy but not as much as in the summer, tourist season. If you are just going to soak up the atmosphere of Rome, then you will have a great time.

There aren't so many tourists in Italy during the Winter. Tourist season is in the Summer. i recommend going in the Winter because there will still be heaps of tourists, but it shouldn't be as crowded i don't think. It is also a lot cheaper to stay in hotels and all of that in the Winter. It will be freezing cold. The christmas decorations in Italy are gorgeous. Italians also celebrate 'La Befana' (their Santa Claus/ Saint Nicolas equivalent) on the 5th of January so it is a shame you wont be there for that.

I think that you should go and i'm sure your trip will be amazing!

Nope (: I went on Christmas. Christmas day you should just walk around and enjoy. there are MANY people out and about. I am pretty sure I went to the Colosseum 2 days after christmas and it was open.
restaurants are open on christmas day. And it is not very crowded. It is a great time to go. It is very wet though. Some days it is cold and others are fine. I am jealous. I would love to go again this year!

Things won't be closed every day during that period, but many places will be shut for the 25th and some on the 26th. There are some nice things to see that are only during the Christmas season. There's the exhibiltion of 100 presepi (nativity scenes) in Sala Bramante at Piazza del Popolo for one and, of course, the Christmas mass. Mass is not just at St Peter's Square - all the churches have one if you want to avoid the crowds. If you're going primaily to sightsee, it might be better to pick another time though.

You most certainly should take the trip.
I think this link was already provided but just in case: http://www.wheninrometours.com/Articles/Events-in-Rome-and-Italy/Christmas-in-Rome-2008.html

Christmas is a special time of the year. Expecially in Rome. All the businesses are open (but December 25). Museums are generally closed on Mondays, check out http://www.romaturismo.it/v2/en/main.asp for a complete list of museum hours and closure dates. December 26 is a mixed bag, when the Vatican museums are closed but most of the city museums are open. During Christmas time the best places to go are surely Via dei Coronari (a streets full of art galleries and design shops), the Spanish Steps area, St. Peter Square, the Trevi Fountain and Via Veneto. My favourite restaurant in Rome is Checchino dal 1887, quite expensive but very good. This is the website:
http://www.checchino-dal-1887.com/ (you could go there on Xmas day)
Here you'll find the best pizza in Rome: "La Gatta Mangiona" via Ozanam, 30
If you're looking for a hotel in Rome you can go to Scoobit.com, the hotel search engine at http://www.scoobit.com, fill the form with city name (Rome) and click on "Search hotel". We went to the first hotel on the right (in the first row): beautiful and clean place, loving it, but feel free to choose the hotel that best fits your needs. Scoobit.com is a safe website I've used many times so far, and you can book on line. Have a great time.

Christmas celebration in Europe is a lot better
and meaningful than in America.

Cold and wet. Not your normal tourist time, those places might be closed. Only Italians and one of you there. Staying indoors, playing games and drinking red wine.
Peace.

Don't waste your money. July, August - tourist season.

Tourists go to Rome because it's the Holy Land where you can see things that are related to the Roman Catholic Church.
