What is Trento, Italy like? |
My sister and I are planning a trip to Italy. We were not planning on going to Trento because we had heard it wasnt that great there but then we found that our grandparents were both from Trento (Fiede and Dasindo). Is it worth it to go to Trento for a few days or should we spend our time somewhere else? What do you know about those towns? |

I go to Trento fairly often - especially every year for the Christmas market. There is a very good castle there and several interesting festivals during the year. The old town is quite nice and there are some interesting shops. The park in front of the train station has some interesting sculpture. Rovereto is also an interesting town and has a nice museum in the castle. There is even more to see in Bolzano - for example, the Ice Man is in the museum there. Trento used to have a period in May when other towns from around Italy and a few others in Europe designed and planted small garden plots around the city. That was always a good time to go.
However, if you've never been to Italy before, you might want to spend more time in the bigger tourist attractions. If you're in Verona or the Lake Garda area, you could easily take a day trip to Trento on the train rather than using multiple days around Trento. |

I'm Italian, and I think that there are some cities near Trento (for example Bolzano, Merano, Bressanone) that are more beautiful than Trento. It's a mountain zone, with rivers, green fields and very good food, and it's particular because there are strong influences from Germany (in the language and in the way of life).
Sorry for my bad english!!! |

I agree with conley39. I spent my christmas holiday in between Bolzano and Trento and from the village i stayed in made day trips out and about. I would recommend staying in one of the villages in Lake Garda and from there you can make various day trips.
To be honest i didn't really like Trento, the park in front of the station was quite grubby and full of immigrants and i felt quite intimidated walking round there. That said there is beautiful castle and the main piazza (Piazza Duomo) is very nice. I would say that a day trip would be more than enough. That way you can enjoy seeing lots of other places.
Dasindo is about 35km from Trento, so i am not sure whether you want to actually see Trento or Dasindo. I would go and see Dasindo (i have never been!) but i think if the reason for your trip is to see where your grandparents were born, you should go visit their birth towns.
BTW did you mean Fiave? There is no Fiede. Fiave and Dasindo are about 3km apart. |
