Kind of depends on your budget. There are several good 3* hotels near the train station that are affordable. Train station is about 30 minutes walking to the main attractions or you could use the local metro or bus. Some people don't like to stay near the train station as some areas can be kind of seedy. I stayed there and I was fine with it. The San Remo hotel is okay.
If you want a good hotel walking distance to Trevi fountain, check out the White Hotel. A 3* hotel but you are paying for location.
EEI Travel has several different hotel offerings in Rome and has some great packages. You can look at hotel details on line or call up and talk to one of their agents. http://www.europeexpress.com/

If you are looking for 2* hotels or pensiones - you might want to pick up one of Rick Steves guides for Italy. You can purchase on line or at any travel store or bookstore. He has several recommendations of cheaper places to stay. All have been visited by his staff and are clean and well kept.

Hope this helps! |

I wouldn't stay in a hotel. Most of the hotels are in touristy places that are surrounded by crime. I much rather prefer to stay at a bed & breakfast that is in a "subburb" but has close access to the train/bus. You also get to experience more of the culture and find the better restaurants that way. Its not hard to find something really nice for whatever your budget. Check out www.venere.com and you can find whatever you're looking for. They usually have some really good reviews as well. |

Definately stay in the city center if this is your first trip to Rome. You want to be close to the sights and be able to take a break in the middle of the day.
It's a bit difficult to recommend a hotel without knowing your budget.
For a B&B I really like Nicolas Inn but for a great 3-star hotel check out the Hotel Portoghese. The Portoghese has a great location near Campo dei Fiori and Piazza Navona plus nice staff. |

i stayed at hotel gladiatori. a beautiful hotel facing the Colosseum with a rooftop deck. it might be a little pricey, but i'd definitely recommend it. |

I stayed at a really awesome hostel last march. www.enjoyrome.com; this website assisted me finding Hotel Colors. This hostel is about a couple of blocks away from the Vactican. This site also has short tour groups that you can sign up for. |
