Use it like you would use Aloha. Use Ciao when greeting people or saying good-bye. Do not use Ciao if you are in a very formal setting with people you do not know. In this case use Buon Giorgno for morning or early afternoon, Buona Sera for good evening or Buona Notte for good night. If you would like to say good-bye in a formal situation use Arrivederla (not Arrivederci which is informal).

Ciao is the ancestor of an ancient Roman greeting, "Tuo schiavo." The phrase originally meant "your slave." As in, I am at your service, here to help your.

'Ciao' is hi and goodbye.
It seems strange at first, to say 'ciao' as hi AND bye... but ya get used to it!

Ciao is the italian word for 'Hi' and 'Bye'. It is VERY casual though, and traditionally, young children do not say it to adults, as a sign of respect. (Buon Giorno (good day) would be used instead)
