Sleepy Dad
Really depends what you like.

North Italy (above Rome) is nice. South of Rome starts to get a little scary (Naples is well-known for crime).

Food is good and cheap (compared to France, England and Switz). Rome has a little of everything. Florence has art (not much else). Venice is nice since it's only foot traffic and boats. Tuscany (countyside around Florence) is sort of like Napa Valley in California. Take the train. You can go anywhere on the train (or taxi). Don't rent a car (it's expensive and not needed).

Check out Rick Steve's website. Great info for Italy and Europe travel in general. You should be able to check his travel guide books out from your local library. All the places he recommends to eat are good and the hotels/hostels are cheap.
