What is italian culture like? |
im american and thinking about studying abroad in italy for a semester and then another semester somewhere else, preferably a spanish speaking country in latin america. i found this really great program specifically that im in love with. its mainly in rome but randomly takes you to london first for sight seeing. i have no clue why but im not asking questions!! theres a trip to venice and the orientation is in florence. on top of having the classes i need to take for my majors, theres a period before the semester begins when you have to take italian for 3 weeks. thats perfect! apparently italian is similar to spanish and my spanish is getting better everyday.im stoked to say the least : ]
anyway i was asking myself "how difficult would it be for a black vegan living in italy?" lol i know i could make it work those are just minor silly questions. so anyway what are some major differences in culture between italy and america?? oh and what are the seasons like? and time differences?
links would be cool too! i hate searching the web for stuff and i left my moms atlas (that goes in depth about history and culture) at home.
oh and are italians racist against black people? everyone keeps telling me this : ( |

Hi I'm Italian and I live in Italy.. Italian people ar more racist in the north and not in the south. I come from the south but I live in the north so I can tell you this. Obviously not everyone is racist but just few.. Italy is beautiful and we are frendly with everyone so don't worry! Florence is beautiful and also Rome and Lecce in the south. Enjoy Italy! ciao ciao! |

Well, they have very beautiful culture!
First, let's start by saying Italian guys are HOTT! So, that'll be a very impressive sight. lol.
One big difference would be, America is soo diverse, and Italy it's usually white people. Of course, it'll be a little weird at first, because black people are "rare" there. Many Italians are racist, I won't say most, I most definately won't say all, but there are racist Italians. But, the ones that are racist, are like EXTREMELY racist. Most of the people are really nice, and welcoming though.
For weather go to: http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/29631/italys_seasons_when_to_visit_and_vacastion.html?cat=16
It tells all about their weather in certain months, and etc.
Italian culture:
http://kwintessential.co.uk/resources/global-etiquette/italy-country-profile.html
That's a very nice website, very detailing, and it has most of the answers to your questions.
Anyway, I hope I helped! = ] |

I lived in italy 3 years, and ended up marrying one! I wouldn't really say Italians are racists, but they are ignorant, especially in the south! They have a huge influx of Africans illegally coming into their country. Many of them sadly become prostitutes or sell counterfit bags and sunglasses for the mafia. Up north they are more diverse, and I found alot less critical of color.
And it's not so much italians that are racist. The young ones are fine. It's those middle aged and older ones, they are!
Being a vegan on the other hand.... Italians love their food! They are not likely to cater to spefics like that. You can get alot of vegitarian dishes, But all the good stuff has cream in it! I don't eat seafood, and i never hear the end of it!!!
as for the language, it is pretty much the same! just instead of ending your words with ...o, end them with ...io! ;)
Hope that helps. Italy is a great place in the end!
And Spain is the same! |

I would say that you would have better luck in a Northern Italian town. As a general rule, the further south you go the more "traditional" the Italians will be. This may mean having more racists ideas and not offering vegan options. Italy is a beautiful country and I think that your experiences there will help you if/when you go to a Spanish speaking country. The importance of family and meal times, Catholicism, small personal space bubbles, what American would consider forward men etc. are all very general themes that seem common in both Italy and other Latin countries.
The bottom line is: even if you go and end up not necessarily liking the country, it will be an unforgettable growing experience! I spent a year there and it wasn't always easy but it was the best opportunity to learn about myself and others. |

@savannah
quote ''the further south you go the more "traditional" the Italians will be''...
well, Venetian people are the most racist people in Italy... and Venice/Veneto is in the North.
by the way... there isn't racism against tourists, and against ladies.
Italian racists are racist against african immigrants, because they are more and more everyday, because they are very poor, they commit crimes and violences... and many of them REALLY smell (it's not an insult, it's just the truth)...
Italians don't want Italy to africanize... that's all
but tourists are welcomed |
