it really depends, my dad just just came from the south and 2 day ago and inland it snowed while here in milan we had sunshine and 12 or 16 °c.
But generally talking winters in the north are cold (this year in january we had -12°c and 30cm of snow)and summer very hot. but now it s ok i'm going around in t shirt during the day and jumper at night

austinguurl
It is chilly in the winter and Spring.

April to September it is very much like the weather in upstate NY.

Remember the Alps and the Piedmont are cooler than Roma,Napoli, and Messina.

It depends on what you mean by Northern. Milan is not too cold, but if you far north into the mountains it will be much colder.

I've heard it is very cold in the winter, but nice and maybe a little hot in the summer.

It depends where you go. Generally though it is hot in the summer and cold in winter with rain in the fall and spring.

For Venice weather in more details you can try:http://www.venice-italy-veneto.com/weather-in-venice-italy.html

While initaly.com has lots on the other major areas in Italy's weather.
