Milan isn't particularly convenient for flying into Florence. It's an hour from Malpensa to the train station on the bus and another 3 hours on the train to Florence. If you've taking a direct overseas flight into Italy, Rome would be more convenient - particularly Fiumicino since there's a train station at the airport. It would be 2.5 hr on the train from the airport to Florence (including time for a train change at Roma Termini station).
However, these days, it's usually a lot cheaper to get a connecting flight rather than a direct flight. In that case, the Florence airport itself is most convenient as someone else suggested.
There are a couple of other good options though. The Pisa airport is larger than Florence. You can take the train from the station at the airport to Florence in less than an hour and a half for 5.60 euro. Many people use this airport for Florence. This is a also good option if you're looking at budget airlines.
Another option to consider is Bologna. It's an hour by train from Florence, but you'll have to take the Aerobus from the airport to the train station. |

Florence does have an airport, but you can find more choices and prices from Milan or Rome (Rome is closer to Florence than Milan) |

Pisa, and go to Florence using train.
Florence airport is too small.

You can chose between Florence and Milan. I think Florence airport is cheaper than Milan airport because it's not not an intercontinental airport like Malpensa! |

The "Amerigo Vespucci" Airport in Peretola is the closest to the city and has direct flights linking it to major European air hubs (such as Paris CDG, Amsterdam, london Gatwick, Vienna, Munich, etc.). |

You can chose between the same Florence and Pisa! If you chose Pisa, then you can catch a train from this city, and in a hour you arrive in Florence! |
