Cheapest would be by flight but the best would be train. Rome to Florence would take around 3 hours by train. Rome - Florence- Venice would be a good route. pisa is around 4 hours from Rome. If you are not from EU and only travelling in Italy, then Trenitalia pass would be cheap. If you are travelling more than one country the EUrail pass would be good.

grasshopper
buy a pass for the trains.

non EU citizens can get pretty inexpensive passes on the internet.

we're doing the same thing this fall and we're going to use the train. It's like $52 bucks per ticket, I know they do offer like a eurorail multi city/multi day pass we just haven't done too much looking into that because it's really billed towards students and we just miss that cut off by a couple years. You can go from Rome to pisa up to florance and then jet over to Venice

I did it by train. Stay in Padova, when you are near Venice. It is cheaper. I stayed in Florence and was able to check out Pisa and other parts of Umbria. Get the express, so you don't deal with all the stops. Have a great trip!!

Cheapest way isnt always the train or buses.U can also get cheap flights online.Flyin is always better coz it saves u time & gives u more time to explore that country.Juz google accomodations & flights.Set a date, book ur flights 1st as flights can be cheaper when its further away from the departure date.u can check some budget flights on the links below. After u have booked ur flights then u can proceed looking for accomodations..from budget to luxuries ones. Also, u can get a travel agent to help u wid quotes for trains/buses.Happy Hunting!
