Flying from Venice to Rome can take as much time as taking the train. From getting from Piazzle Roma to Venice's Marco Polo or Treviso airport and getting from Rome's Ciampino or Fiumicino airports to Rome Central, showing up early at the airport to check in/security checks... can take just as much time as the 4.5hr travel on the Eurostar train - which takes you from Venice Santa Lucia station which is in the heart of Venice to Rome Termini train station. Venice Mestre station is on the mainland.

You can travel to Rome cheap on the Eurostar train-Italy's fastest-premier train. Travel 1st class for only 29euros!

Travel 1st class for only 29 euros if available, otherwise try the 39 euro price. If your plans are firm(it is cumbersome to get a refund), you can book using the "ticketless" option, you will get a PNR number and an e-mail from Trenitalia which you must show the conductor when he comes around and he will issue you a paper ticket. Don't lose your e-mail response. First register with Trenitalia for your user name and password. If you don't see the e-mail response in your inbox, check your junkmail/spam folder. The 29/39 Eurostar seats in 1st and 2nd class are limited, so depending when you are going (high season?), the seats might not be available when you arrive in Italy.

The promotion is in the drop down menu (click the arrow to the right of 'intera') "In Eurostar a 29 euro" and "In Eurostar a 39euro". Try the 29 euro price first.

You can also get your tickets in Venice S. Lucia station
from the Trenitalia agents 1-2 days prior to your travel day. If you are going in the summer or during the holidays(Christmas, Easter), I would get the tickets 3-5 days prior to your travel day. Or you can go to the American Express Office close to San Marco. The girl at the travel desk is very helpful. It's located on Sal S Moise by Chiesa S. Moise (a church). The office is closed on the weekend, however. Intersecting streets are Calle di Ca Vallaresso/Frezzeria. It's not far from the tree lined street of Giardinetti Reali, which in on the waters edge by San Marco.

You can only book with Trenitalia 60 days in advance. You can also bring your favorite snacks, sandwiches, drinks with you on the train. The restaurant car is expensive and the food not so great.
