What is the best area to stay in, in Florence?

I'm traveling with my best friend, we are both in our late twenties and would like to know the best area that is convenient to the best day time sight seeing and has a good night life. (the trip is in the middle of June)

Thanks!

I use this site for hotels here in Italy: http://en.venere.com/hotels_florence/. You can select specific areas within a city from the map and then sort by price, rating or other criteria. The reviews by past guests are usually useful. I don't stay in Florence very often because I live within two hours of the city. When I do stay there, it's usually in the areas identified as Uffizi, Duomo, or Palazzo Strozzi on the Venere map. The Santa Maria Novella area can be a little less expensive, but it's within easy walking distance of all the major sights. The historic part of Florence is very compact and extremely easy to walk.

I stayed at this place the last time and was pleasently surprised (free internet, good breakfast, good value, lower priced than the places I usually stay): http://en.venere.com/hotels_florence/palazzo_strozzi/hotel_bretagna.html#

Near center is the best choice for sight seeing and night life. You can go to Scoobit.com, the hotel search engine at http://www.scoobit.com Switch the language to English, then fill the form with city name (Florence) you can leave the address field blank. Then click on "Search hotel". I went to MSNHotel Bigallo, nice and clean place, loving it. Scroll down and look on the right. But feel free to choose the hotel that best fits your needs. It's a safe website I've used many times so far, and you can book on line. You're gonna love Florence. It's such a beautiful city and there's so much to see.

The area around the back of the cathedral (the duomo) is the best, as u can find cheap hotel, is in the centre close to all must-sees and during night time is lively and has a lot of bars and restaurants.

For instance, anything around via del Corso or Via del Proconsolo is good. There a lot of little streets, and beautiful charming spots. U will love florence.

Oh, if u want to get a breathtaking view of the city (river, mountains on the other side), plus an extra typical-country like italian bite, go to Fiesole. It is a small town outside the city, really close. U can get an urban bus line to get there, just ask in the hotel or in the bus station.
