Mantua wa rated best city to live in italy 2005. its located in northern italy by bologna and parma. the town is surrounded by lakes on three sides |

It's SIENA - It has been recently rated as "best city to live in Italy" and it was also awarded a 9 years ago. This should end up any other argument on which one is the best but I can add that Siena, even not is that big town, has a lot of Works of Arts and its downtown is still a medieval city. Siena is located just in the centre of the Tuscany (the best region of Italy...) not so far from other awesome towns of this region (Florence,Pisa,Lucca,etc.) and just in the middle of Italian "boot",an easy location to reach all the other worthy with a visit Italian towns (Rome, Venice, Naples, Milan, etc.).

Florence is, arguably, the worst place to settle due to flocks of Chinese, japanese, Britons, Americans... So many tourists, it lost its charm.
- Bologna is beautiful and genuine. It's also a party town thanks to the many universities (somewhat of an Italian Boston...)
- Rome is a must see... but living there could be stressful as it is quite big and has no public transportation worth a big city.
- Verona is splendid, but a bit old fashioned & back dated
- Venice... amazing, but forget about it! It's a museum, not a city.
- Milan is nice... But just that. & the crowds are a bit superficial for Italians.
- Perugia is a delight. But like Verona, it's a bit small and regional.
- Naples is trully fascinating, but if you haven't lived in NY in the 80's you better no settle there.
- Sicilian cities are caotic.
So, if you want to settle for longer than 2 months, I would choose Bologna (on top of being just a few hours away from Florence, Venice, Verona, Milan)
But if you want to go for a lifetime (more than 2 years) and you have the money to settle in the heart of the city, then ROME is the winner.

It totally depends on your personality, nature, lifestyle. There are so many best cities, but each caters to a different kind of person.
For example, Venice and Rome are two different worlds and each is "best" for it's own qualities. I personaly prefer smaller villages tucked away from all the tourists, etc. But that's me, my nature-get my point. |

I lived in Florence for 3 months and loved it but the problem is that is expensive and full of tourists. A place I really like which is in the north is called Bergamo.. it´s beautiful, it has its old part and it´s just one hour away from Milano.
If you are moving to Italy, I envy you, it´s the best country in the world! |

Yeah, Florence is really nice, smaller and easier to get around than Rome. Whatever you do, don't let anybody talk you into Naples, it's a shithole. I'll be honest, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland have much better places to live, but if you're staying in Italy, I would go with Florence. |
