What is the best city to visit in Italy?

The most amazing Italian cities are Rome, Venice and Florence but it's hard to name the best one. It also depends on your age group, what you like and in which season you visit.

For the upcoming New Years holiday Rome would be better choice as it's drier there so you may even get plenty of sunshine (temperature 2 - 12 C). It's a really interesting place to see the remains and arts from the Ancient Rome and Renaissance Italy. There's plenty of fun for the younger crowd as well, lots of concerts, clubs and outdoor restaurants. Fashion shopping is not as exciting as in northern Italian cities but it's great if you just want to buy artisan products.

My most favorite Italian city is Venice - out of this world, very beautiful and romantic but probably better suited to the older crowd. It's expensive and best visited from April to August when the sky is clear. In the other months it tends ot be quite wet.

A lot young American people prefer Florence and its surrounding Tuscan towns and villages. This place is a great delight to explore and discover on your own. Florence itself is like a elegant Italian woman with a lot of beautiful adornment, artistic talent and old fashioned charm. Good art museums, a fantastic town centre, scenic sunset overlooking the Arno river and fine steak.

There really isn't a single "best" city to visit. As you can see from all the other answers, a lot of people will have different perceptions of what's the best. What's best for you depends a lot on your interests, when you go and how much time you have. Every place mentioned so far, and many that haven't been are worth visiting - every place has it's own character and charm that can be appreciated. That's why I feel I still have a lot of exploring to do even though I've been here for about 9 years now.

I would suggest:
Florence - visit Chianti, Siena, Fiesole
Venice
Sorrento, Positano, Capri (Amalfi Coast)
Rome - it is a must see (however reminds me a lot of NY) very busy city and lots of turists.

I suggest you Turin (in Piedmont, there are mole antonelliana, egyptian museum, cinema museum), rome (Colosseum, fountain di trevi, obelisks, palace of politics -I can't explain better, sorry-), Naples (Vesuvius, wonderful places like ischia, positano), perugia (palace de' priori, fontana, Etruscan arco, duomo), venezia (piazza san marco, laguna), florence (museum and old palaces), ravenna (wonderful old churches).
