Sorry for the pat answer, "It depends." Call your cards' service #'s and ask for a statement of foreign use fees. Ask about service charges and exchange rate fees. Each company has different charge schedules and they change from time to time. Head to the library and check out recent copies of travel magazines. Their "answer man" sections usually provide updates on credit card and ATM use avery six months or so. Finally, before you leave call your bank to notify them of foreign ATM use. Ask if they'll increase your daily withdrawal limit. Call the credit card companies to inform them of foreign travel and spending, otherwise their security might put a "hold" on your cards. Finally, I have learned in numerous trips to Italy that CASH spends better for a better value receiving discounts of 5% to 15% for cash, even more sometimes on clothing or at small retailers.

I did not like having a lot of cash on hand. I used my Visa for almost everything and my bank did the going exchange rate at the time of purchase. I did notice that some places did not take mastercard. |
