All the Italian Ice creams (gelati) are yummi !! If yr 'best kind' is meaning the 'best flavour' this is totaly depending on your taste and the only way to know what's for you the best is to try all of them. From yr question I don't understand however if you are meaning "gelato italiano" in general or if you're referring to the one we have here in Italy; I don't know anything about the quality of the 'italian gelato' made abroad but I know a lot of the one that's really "made in Italy", produced (and consumed) here.
Practically any village has one or more "gelateria" where you can buy any kind of gelato. However if you want to taste the best Italian Ice cream you need to look for "gelateria artigianale" that are the only ones entitled to sell the "home made" ice cream that in Italian is "gelato artigianale". The members of this particular pool are only using natural ingredients and producing the ice cream with the artisan proceed. On the windows shops (but also inside) the best gelaterias have posters and labels with the writing "gelato artigianale"; if you don't see this, then I suggest you going out from there and look for another shop....!!

Any kind of gelato is good gelato (in my opinion anyway). When I was in Italy I tried chocolate chip and then another I do not know how to spell or even say....it had some kind of fruit in it. Delicious!

In Turin there's a place called Testa that has a flavour called Testa Nero. It's an extremely rich dark chocolate flavour that is almost black in color. It's marvellous.

In Amalfi I had an amazing cup of Mars Bar gelato! It also cost about EUR 6...

If you're looking for a flavour that is great in any city, I'd have to recommend Tiramisu. It's best if it comes with ladyfinger biscuits right in it, but even without the biscuits it's always fantastic.

pistachio from the bougainvillea gelatrie in sorrento.
