What is the best route to drive to Italy from UK/France?

I have seen routes that suggest going through France and then going along the coast of Italy but a lot of routes look like they go through Switzerland and down through Northern Italy.

We would be able to stop off twice on the way out and twice on the way back. We are heading to a place an hour outside Florence. Any advice gratefully received.

it depends ofcourse of which direction in france you come exactly...
so in italy there are two ways to get there, depending from where you come, or it is over milano(coming from switserland), or over torino...(autostrada nr 21) anyway at piacenza these two roads meet eachother and than you take the autostrada nr 1 to firenze .

It is best to go through Switzerland and visit Lugano on the way South.
Then check out Lake Como in Northern Italy.

I did it from London last year in May. We got the ferry to Calais. This was the itinerary:
1st day: Calais to Reims
2nd day: Reims to Dijon, Dijion to Macon
3rd day:Macon to Lyon, Lyon to Marseille
4th day: Marseille to Nice, Nice to San Remo(in Italy already).
From San Remo we went to Venice but if you are going to Florence you should follow the motorway going south. I know it seems quite a long itinerary but we wanted to see a bit of France as well. I guess you could take some bits out and not stopping in places. We found Marseille very busy but entertaining in a way, also Nice was full due to the cinema festival. Montecarlo would have been another stop on the way to Italy but the GP was on that week end therefore extremely busy. On the way back we did Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, France and back to London.

I think you would enjoy it whichever way you go.
